Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 - 1778) was the most renowned and influential engraver of his day, standing as the field's greatest figure between the ages of Rembrandt and Goya.

The Vedute di Roma were exceptionally popular and influential throughout Europe, feeding 18th century Europe's popular fascination with classical antiquity. They also transformed and further popularized the genre of travel views that came into its own at this time.
